FEATURE: CONTE AND THE OTHER 5 PLAYERS FROM GHANA TO HAVE WON THE TUNISIAN LEAGUE

Every player dreams of winning titles regardless of the division or competition their clubs compete in. For a Ghanaian player, the issue of culture barrier often impedes their dream in the Sahara region.

Recently, big names like Charles Taylor, Frank Osei, Sammy Adjei and Derrick Sasraku garnered the applause in the Ghanaian league but failed to replicate their forms on the Carthaginian land. The few who managed to carve a name for themselves need to be celebrated. 

 

Kwame Bonsu

Midfielder Kwame Bonsu "Conte" and an unbeaten Esperance side are runaway champions in Tunisia with three matches to the end of the season after Sunday's 1-1 home draw with SC Chebba. A nine point lead and a goal difference of +23 makes him the 6th Ghanaian to win the Tunisian League. Bonsu joined the Blood and Gold in the summer of 2019 from Asante Kotoko for US$ 150 000.

Moussa Narry

After a decade of  league drought, Faouzi Benzarti led the Sousse based club to the coveted trophy in 2006/07. Benzarti's side had a Ghanain in the person of Moussa Narry as he conquered Tunisia. French man, Bertrand Marchand would later take over the side as they went on to win the CAF Champions League and Super Cup.

Sadat Bukari

Sadat Bukari joined Etoile du Sahel in 2007 from Hearts of Lions. In his first season due to the difference in league calendars, the young forward  won a league medal with his new side. Like Narry, he won the CAF Champions League and Super Cup the next season under Marchand.

Seidu Salifu

In June 2015, Seidu Salifu started 26 out of the 30 matches as the Club Africain finished with a three-point lead more than their closet challengers Etoile du Sahel. Then 21-year, he played 80 minutes as Club Africain won 2-1 at Esperance Sportive de Zarzis on the final day of competition.

Harrison Afful

Harrison Afful joined Esperance in 2009 from Asante Kotoko. He won the league on 3 consecutive occasions from 2009/10 to 2011/12. In 2013/14 the Blood and Gold side won the trophy for the 4th time in 5 years after surrendering the trophy the previous year to Club Africain. The Ghanaian international won the 2010/11 Champions League with the Tunisians.

Emmanuel Clottey

Emmanuel fresh from his continental buzz with Berekum Chelsea in 2012  joined the Blood and Gold  and spent very little time in landing a medal. The leading scorer in the CAF Champions League with 12 goals played a bit part role yet he won gold in the Blood and Gold jersey as the were crowned champions in 2011/12.
